Combining surgical expertise and aesthetic precision, Dr Tanvi Gaonker delivers personalised and innovative eye care solutions
Dr Tanvi Gaonker is a Consultant at My Eye Hospital, Goa, with expertise in
Oculoplasty, Ocular oncology, facial aesthetics, and advanced cataract surgery.
Dr Tanvi completed her schooling at Manovikas English Medium, a school
renowned for its academic excellence and emphasis on extra-curricular activities such as debates, elocutions, quizzes, and sports. She pursued her
higher secondary education at Smt Parvatibai Chowgule College, which fostered overall development. Dr Tanvi then graduated from Goa Medical College before completing her post-graduation in Ophthalmology, along with senior residency, at Guru Nanak Eye Centre (GNEC), Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi.
Initially, medicine was not Dr Tanvi’s first career choice. Having a strong affinity for mathematics, she aspired to pursue astronomy. “Although I grew up in a medical household, surrounded by medical books and discussions,my interest in space was stronger at the time. Eventually, however, I gravitated towards medicine, likely influenced by the environment I was raised in. Ophthalmology, which runs in the family, seemed to be a natural fit, and I was certain from the beginning that surgery was the path for me,”she reflects.
During her postgraduation, Dr Tanvi was part of the sister unit in Oculoplasty.
Watching her seniors perform these surgeries on screen left her fascinated. “I began performing minor cases, and there was immense satisfaction in seeing patients’ happy smiles after achieving their desired cosmetic outcomes.
Dr Tanvi is a gold medallist and an exceptionally trained professional who believes that staying updated in the ever evolving field of ophthalmology is relatively easy. “Experts in Oculoplasty actively share surgeries, research, and innovations on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. National and state ophthalmological societies also host regular classes, lectures, and case discussions. Being able to access this from the comfort of my home is a blessing. Physical conferences are invaluable too, offering the chance for personal interaction with mentors,” she notes.
One of the most challenging and rewarding cases in her career involved treating a young girl with orbital cancer. Despite multiple recurrences following numerous surgeries and chemotherapy, Dr Tanvi and her colleagues had almost lost hope. “After discussions with oncologists, pathologists, and other specialists, the patient’s family requested one final surgical attempt. To oursurprise and relief, she became tumour-free after the surgery and remains so today. It was a divine intervention, and the case remains one of the most
challenging yet rewarding experiences for our team,” says Dr Tanvi.
Dr Tanvi’s expertise extends to facial aesthetics, where she helps improve both
ocular health and appearance. She believes that good vision and aesthetics complement one another, enhancing an individual’s confidence. “By offering both, I am helping my patients see better, look better, and feel their best. My training at a high-volume tertiary centre like GNEC exposed me to a wide array of eye conditions. Though I was in the Oculoplasty unit, we also treated cases involving cataract, glaucoma, trauma, and more,” she explains.
Acknowledging that no surgery can guarantee a 100% result, Dr Tanvi emphasises the importance of setting realistic expectations with patients. “There may be complications, under or over-correction, or a need for touch-ups, despite the best efforts. I always stress this to my patients. Pre-surgical counselling and dedicating ample time to each case is crucial in Oculoplasty. It’s always better to under-promise and over-deliver,” she advises.
While establishing her practice, Dr Tanvi enjoys travelling and exploring new
destinations with friends. “Travel gives me the perfect opportunity to reset, ensuring I return to work feeling rejuvenated. I also value my sleep and seize every opportunity to rest,” she says with a smile.
As a young consultant in a highly specialised field, Dr Tanvi shares a piece of
advice for medical students or aspiring ophthalmologists: “I would advise them to pursue a branch or speciality they are truly passionate about. Without
passion, it becomes just another job.
Looking ahead, Dr Tanvi is keen to raise awareness about Oculoplasty in Goa, where the field is still in its nascent stages. “I also plan to stay updated with the latest advancements in ophthalmology to ensure the community has access to the best possible eye care,” she concludes.
