GHAG Lecture on Kaavi Art by Heta Pandit

Heta Pandit

Kaavi art has originated in Goa and has spread to neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra where it took on its own adaptation, said Heta Pandit in her presentation

The Goa Heritage Action Group organised a talk on ‘Kaavi Art of the Konkan’ recently at the Gallery Gitanjali, Panaji as part of their series ‘Goa Heritage Talks’. The talk on this ancient, ethnically Goan architectural art of etching on walls was delivered by the Group’s Chairperson Heta Pandit, based on her independent research on the art. The art, Pandit said, has originated in Goa and has spread to neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra where it took on its own adaptation. The presentation had slides that demonstrated the materials and technique used in the execution. The three main forms in kaavi motifs are borders, mandalas and figurative art. Just as kaavi spread to other areas, it was also adapted to decorate church walls in Old Goa, where its name was changed to sgraffito. The main difference in the two, kaavi and sgraffito, is that kaavi uses a lot of figurative art while there is very little figurative work in sgraffito. Pandit also showed a few samples of the Kaavi Directory that has been prepared with the help of Kaushalya and Ramdas Gadekar, two well-known Goan artists. The directory of kaavi motifs will be made available freely to anyone who needs it. The GHAG has also prepared an exhaustive report on kaavi sites in Goa that is also available to researchers and scholars. The talk was well-attended with both scholars and art lovers who made the Q&A session very lively
