Tech Expo makes students think like engineers

On Engineers Day (15th September 2019), Centre for Technical Education, BITS, Goa TechExpo’19 to showcase projects carried out by the technical clubs on campus –  ERC, SAEIndia BITS-Pilani Goa Collegiate Club, Aerodynamics Club, BITS Goa, SEDS Celestia and SandBox, BITS Pilani, K.K. Birla Goa Campus. The event was coordinated by Jay Kamat and Chinmay Gokhale, CTE president. Tech Expo saw a heartening response of more than 200 school students from over 10 schools in the state

What was the objective of the Expo?

The idea behind the event was to make people outside of BITS aware of what we as engineering students do at BITS. This is the first time such an event happened, and we are hoping that it would continue every year.

What was the response to Tech Expo 2019?

A total of 210 school students witnessed the event. Over 100 people from all walks of life and on-campus students came to witness the event. The visitors enjoyed the experience at the event.

How many schools and from which areas participated at the event?

We had participation from over 10 schools –  Mushtifund High School, K B Hedgewar High School, People’s High School, Bhatikar Model High School, Almeida High School, Dhempe College, Sharada Mandir School, among others. The students who participated hailed from all corners of the state.

What do you think that the students will derive from this event?

The students will benefit the most out of this as they know what engineering is right from the time they are in high school and how important it is to think like an engineer. They also get exposure to what students do after they get into engineering colleges like BITS Pilani.

What projects were displayed at the Expo?

The Expo witnessed a wide range of engineering projects (19 in number) ranging from robots, cars, drones, telescopes to projects on persistence of vision and Schleiren photography.

How was the event paced?

The event started at 10 in the morning. The students were first briefed about BITS and the technical clubs at the institute. We also specified on the importance of the day as 15th September is Engineers Day. There were talks by various project heads describing their projects. There was also a live demonstration of the car and a drone show to mark the end of the event on a high note. The event closed at 2:30 pm.

How long have you been working on this TechExpo?

We had a very dedicated team which was working really hard to get this idea of the event into reality. It took efforts of four months to finally see it happen. We are very grateful to the director, Dr Raghurama G who was very supportive. We would like to thank all the students and faculty members who were a part of this and also all the well-wishers who helped make this event a big success
