Mega Job Fair draws crowds and promises of employment

The Labour and Employment Department’s Mega Job Fair saw a lot of interest on its opening day on 8th November. According to Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, almost 5500 positions from more than 150 companies/employers were up for grabs at the two-day Mega Job Fair that was held at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium, Taleigao. The number of applicants had surpassed 19,000. The estimated unemployment rate in Goa in the month of September was up to 10.9%. The Goa Employment Exchange has over 1.4 lakh registered individuals looking for gainful employment, according to the government. The Labour and Employment Commissioner Raju Gawas stated that companies conducted interviews directly and the Department has requested some to extend the offer letters at the event itself. IT, pharmaceuticals, tourism and hospitality, logistics, automotive, healthcare, banking and finance, insurance, manufacturing, sales, marketing, aviation, and cruise liners are a few of the broad industries that are hiring. About 36 of the 155 organisations that participated in the job fair are from the  hospitality sector, including renowned establishments like IHCL (Taj Group), Grand Hyatt, Karma Royal, Holiday Inn, and Goa Marriott Resort.

Atanasio Monserrate, Minister of Labour and Employment, stated that when parents and educated unemployed kids approach him in search of employment, it hurts and disheartens him. “Youth are the pillars of society. Be flexible to take up jobs in private sector,” Monserrate advised them
