Healing Paws and Exploring the World

From healing animals to exploring the world, Dr Karla Maris de Sousa balances a fulfilling career in veterinary care with her passions for travel, football and personal growth

Dr Karla Maris de Sousa is a dedicated veterinarian with a lifelong passion for animal care, a vocation she decided on at the age of three. “At that time, I couldn’t quite say ‘veterinarian,’ so I would refer to myself as a future animal doctor,” she recalls with a smile. Her deep affection for animals inspired her to pursue a career focused on their health and well-being.

For Dr Karla Maris, the most rewarding aspect of her work lies in the rare and remarkable cases where animals make a full recovery after weeks of intensive treatment. “There are instances where, as a veterinarian, I too begin to lose hope. Yet, time and again, animals demonstrate resilience far greater than we often realise. Witnessing an animal bounce back and go on to live a long, healthy life is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.”

Dr Karla Maris describes herself as inherently curious, with a particular passion for solving puzzles. “I enjoy working on 1000+ piece puzzles in my spare time,” she shares. This love for problem-solving influenced her decision to specialise in preventive medicine rather than surgery or other fields. “I chose preventive medicine because it aligns with my analytical nature, where attention to detail and a methodical approach are key.”

Dr Karla Maris is also eager to further her expertise in veterinary imaging. Recognising that Goa currently lacks certified veterinary imaging specialists and radiologists, she is determined to pursue advanced training in this area. “Once I find the right program and have the time, I’m committed to obtaining certification in veterinary imaging to better serve my patients and the veterinary community.”

Dr Karla Maris is an avid traveler and self-proclaimed shopaholic. Add to this her love for football, being a passionate supporter of Liverpool Football Club. “I played football throughout middle school, high school, and higher secondary, and football has always been a significant part of my life, thanks to my family’s shared love for the sport. Over the years, I’ve been immersed in the excitement of matches and leagues.”

While Dr Karla Maris admits that she no longer follows her team as closely as she once did, her brother, Carlos, remains a dedicated Tottenham Hotspur fan, never missing a match, regardless of the circumstances. “Football has always been my favorite sport, both to watch and to play.”

As a veterinarian, Dr Karla Maris recognises the importance of maintaining physical fitness, as some of her patients can weigh over 60 kilograms. This physical readiness is crucial for the demands of her profession.

She has a deep empathy for anxious dogs, particularly those with traumatic pasts who are fearful of veterinary visits. “It often takes several months of regular visits before these dogs are comfortable enough for me to even touch them. However, once that bond and trust are established, it is incredibly rewarding. With each visit, you can see the pet gradually reveal more of its personality as they begin to trust you. These moments of progress are truly memorable for me.”

Dr Karla Maris understands the importance of adaptability in balancing her career as a veterinarian with her love for travel. “I believe it’s crucial for veterinarians to take regular breaks and disconnect from the demands of the job. The nature of veterinary work can be emotionally taxing and stressful, as we often deal with very ill pets. Additionally, managing difficult clients can add to the challenge. While I am grateful to have met many wonderful people through my work, there are some clients who can make for particularly tough days.”

She acknowledges that burnout and depression are common in the veterinary field, highlighting the need for veterinarians to prioritise their physical, mental, and emotional well-being in order to provide the best possible care for their patients. “Thankfully, Goa now has more veterinarians and 24/7 facilities that offer pet owners support when their regular vet is unavailable.”

She emphasises the importance of hard work, adding, “I make sure to give my best during my shifts so that I can enjoy my breaks with a clear conscience, fully recharged and ready to continue my work.”

Dr Karla Maris credits her family as her greatest source of support. “My father has been my biggest cheerleader and inspiration. A true workaholic, he often says he will retire when he dies. His incredible work ethic and ambition not only motivate me but have inspired hundreds of others whom he motivates every day.”

She also reflects on her early experiences that solidified her career choice. “In high school, I had the opportunity to assist at Dr Marilyn Estibeiro’s clinic. By observing her and Dr Nerissa at work, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to become a veterinarian.”

Throughout her challenging academic journey during her bachelor’s and master’s studies, her friends provided invaluable support. She also acknowledges the significant role that Petzone and Dr Leena Dalal have played in her career. “Without Petzone and Dr Dalal, I wouldn’t be where I am today. The clinic continually inspires me to expand my knowledge and improve my practice.”

Dr Karla Maris has plans to open her own clinic in the near future. “I aspire to be my own boss and establish a practice that is truly my own. While I am passionate about being a veterinarian, I am not certain I will continue in this role indefinitely. The future is unpredictable, and I’m open to exploring new opportunities as they arise,” she says.
