Goa pushes for rooftop solar projects

With emphasis being laid on promoting renewable energy and electric mobility, the government, through the Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA), signed a MoU with Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology Limited (MAHAPREIT), a subsidiary of Maharashtra government’s Mahatma Phule Backward Class Development Corporation (MPBCDC), to explore rooftop solar projects and electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the state.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who said that the collaboration will boost sustainable energy practices, especially in MSME sector in the state. GEDA will identify suitable project sites and assist with required clearances, while MAHAPREIT will conduct feasibility studies and formulate project proposals.

“This initiative will streamline and promote the implementation of rooftop solar systems for growth of sustainable energy practices within Goa’s MSME sector,” Sawant said.

Dr Amol Shinde, chairman and MD of MAHAPREIT, explained how the model will help create a mutually beneficial situation for all stakeholders.

The government aims to extensively promote this initiative across industrial forums and bodies.

With GEDA and MAHAPREIT driving the process, from registrations to contractor selection and monitoring, this marks a first-of-its-kind solar project to be implemented directly by the state.
