To promote and strengthen access to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, stated that the Goa government will set up STEM labs in primary and secondary schools in every taluka.
He said that these STEM labs would inspire students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Dr Sawant who also holds the education portfolio inaugurated the first STEM lab at Sarkari Prathamik Vidyalaya, Housing Board, Sanquelim that has been set up for Rs 6 lakhs.
A senior officer said that STEM is a method that integrates these four disciplines, fostering a deep understanding of their interconnection. STEM plays a pivotal role in shaping society, from advancement in healthcare to innovations in technology. STEM learning helps students not only to adapt to these changes but also contribute to them. STEM opens doors from engineering and computer science to healthcare and finance to shape the future of students. The teaching turns teaching into a fun, interactive and engaging experience, he added.
The Chief Minister said that through these labs, students would be inclined towards innovation and science and the benefits would be seen amongst the future generations. “Today there is a need for students to learn technology, science and mathematics. We should create awareness among students from Std I to IV so that science and mathematics become favourite subjects.”
He also inaugurated the Skills Development Library at the Government College in Sanquelim. Dr Sawant said that the library will offer a learning hub with data, information regarding industry- ready preparation for employment, entrepreneurship, research and higher education.
“Education alone is not sufficient to get jobs; skills are necessary,” said Dr Sawant, adding that skills will ensure huge job opportunities in technology and hospitality, among other sectors.
Dr Sawant also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Government College, Sankhali; Directorate of Higher Education and Putzmeister, a German company.
