Sculpture of ‘Bhadel’ installed by Commonwealth Developers
As part of its corporate social responsibility, Commonwealth Developers Pvt. Ltd. Goa’s leading real estate developers have installed a stainless steel, life size sculpture of Bhadel, a traditional Goan women coolie which is an institution by itself. This life size sculpture of traditional Bhadel has been created by renowned Goan sculptor, Subodh Kerkar.
Datta Damodar Naik, Managing Director of Commonwealth Developers Pvt. Ltd said that Margao, the commercial capital of Goa, had number of Bhadels, women coolies who were very sincere, honest and hardworking. With the advent in education Bhadels are going to be extinct and one need not repent for that. However, this sculpture has been installed so that the next generation should remember that such an institution called Bhadel did exist in Margao and served the social needs of the community. In European countries there are such sculptures of common people rather than public figures and national leaders. They become part of street furniture and photo points for tourists. It is from this point of view the traffic circle opposite Gomant Vidya Niketan is beautified so that it could serve as a tourist attraction for tourists who visit Margao, Naik said.
