Goa Institute of Management hosts its Grand Alumni Meet

Entrepreneurship Conclave held on the theme ‘Nostos’ meaning ‘Homecoming’ as part of the silver jubilee celebration of Goa Institute of Management

One of the foremost management institutes in the country, Goa Institute of Management (GIM) hosted its annual Grand Alumni Meet – an evocative event that marked the homecoming, celebration of 25 glorious years of GIM and unparalleled joy of communion with the Alma Mater, at its campus in Sanquelim recently.

The institute, known for its diverse alumni base, organized a number of activities this year for existing students as well as its alumni, the Grand Alumni Meet being one of the more prestigious events. The meet witnessed students from various batches of the prestigious institute coming together to celebrate and share experiences. This year, the Alumni meet was centered on the theme ‘Nostos’, which is a Greek term that signifies the homecoming or a homeward journey.

The event welcomed several successful graduates that have experienced all that GIM had to offer over the decades. It was not only a platform for the alumni to reconnect with their batch mates, but it served as a medium for present students to meet with the past pupils. The function was presided over by Fr. Romuald D’Souza, Founder of Goa Institute of Management and Dr. Ajit Parulekar, Director, Goa Institute of Management as the chief guests.

The event kick started with the Annual General Body Meeting between the alumni and management which was to discuss issues regarding the college and about optimizing the available resources for a meaningful outcome with respect to the welfare of Goa Institute of Management.

Progressing into the afternoon, the event commenced with the lighting of the lamp, followed by the Director’s address, highlighting the major role played by alumni towards the developmental regime of Goa Institute of Management and about the multiple accolades that Goa Institute of Management has brought so far. Fr. Romauld D’Souza, Founder, GIM delivered a short speech on his vision about the changing role of alumni and how that will contribute towards a brighter future of Goa Institute of Management which was followed by a short ceremony to present the Alumni Achiever’s Award.

For the year 2017, the ‘Alumni Achiever’s Award’ was presented to Gagan Banga, VC and MD, Indiabulls Housing Finance, who was a student of the 1998 batch of Goa Institute of Management. This was followed by ‘Buddy Talk,’ which was the student-alumni interactive session, which provided the students insights into the fields that they are majoring in.

‘Opportunity Mapping’ was also conducted which was a mentoring session by the alumni towards budding entrepreneurs of Goa Institute of Management. The students presented their ideas before  a panel who, in return, weighed the pros and cons of their business models, to polish them into better and effective plans.

Lastly to end things on a lighter note, musical performances as well as a standup comedy act were performed by students of Goa Institute of Management.

The Grand Alumni Meet proved to be an ideal opportunity for the alumni to break away from the cocoon of their corporate lives for an evening of homecoming and celebration, to renew old bonds, foster new ties and relive the magical years they had at the GIM campus.

GIM was started in 1993 under Fr. Romuald D’Souza supported by a team of professionals and industrialists and has risen to be one of the finest management schools in the country. Since its inception, GIM has systematically built a rich learning environment through academia, industry and alumni

 

Session on E-Waste Management held at St. Xavier’s College

A session on E-Waste Management was recently conducted by the Department of B.C.A. of St. Xavier’s College. The resource person was Sushant Figueiredo, Independent Green Building and Environmental Consultant, Goa. In his address, Figuiredo shared his knowledge on managing various sources of e-waste and disposal of the wastes.

Videos on the causes and effects of e-waste showing the extent of hazards and destruction caused by it were shown. A statistical analysis stated that about 1.7 million tonnes of e-waste was generated in India in 2016 with IT and Telecom Companies being the largest contributors. Along with the ill-effects to the lives of individuals caused as a result of biological magnification due to heavy metals.

Figuiredo concluded his session by suggesting ways to reduce unnecessary e-waste and prevent the hazards caused to the environment which included the 3Rs –  Recycle, Reduce and Reuse along with “Refuse”. He also mentioned of the steps taken by the Government and Village Panchayats

 

Voters Awareness Campaign by students of V M Salgaocar College of Law

The Students of V.M. Salgaocar College of Law conducted a   Voters Awareness Campaign  on “pledge to vote.” The campaign was conducted in the area of Panaji and Valpoi where almost 10% voters had pledged to vote. The Old Goa Legal Aid Cell collaborated with the North Goa Collectorate and presented a Street play titled “Jaag Goyenkara Jaag” at KTC bus stand as well as the Panaji market wherein the Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) Sapna Bandodkar was also present

 

G.R. Kare College of Law Students’ Council Inauguration 2017-18

The inauguration of the Students’ Council of G.R. Kare College of Law, Margao-Goa for the academic year 2017-2018 was held recently.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Saba Da Silva, Principal of the College. Dattaprasad Lawande, Advocate General of the State of Goa graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

He enlightened the students about the importance of internship and practical training in developing the traits of a good lawyer and lauded the efforts of the Principal and faculty in making a significant contribution to Legal Education. He congratulated Manashree Naik and Gourav Gaunkar, two students of the College, both of whom secured the highest scores at the LL.B. degree and B.A.LL.B. Examination respectively.                Goretti Simoes, Asst. Prof. and Head of Dept. of the College administered the oath of office to the newly nominated Cabinet consisting of students who were selected and nominated on the basis of leadership qualities, regularity and all-round performance
